Washington Commanders suffer humiliating loss under Ron Rivera as Giants triumph with 3rd string QB

FEDEX FIELD — Washington endured a devastating loss on Sunday, dropping to a 4-7 record after being defeated 31-19 by New York. It was their worst loss of the season and possibly the Ron Rivera era.

The Giants, with a meager 2-8 record and a third-string quarterback, Tommy DeVito, managed to secure 246 yards passing and three touchdowns against Washington’s defense at FedEx Field. DeVito, who in the previous week’s loss to the Cowboys only passed for 86 yards, picked apart the Commanders secondary when the blitz wasn’t on.

Washington’s defense showed a strong pass rush, but it was not enough to stop DeVito’s passing game.

This loss doesn’t suggest the need for major changes; it demands them.

Washington’s turnovers were a major issue, with three fumbles, including one on a kick return, and three interceptions from young QB Sam Howell. While Howell displayed moments of brilliance, his passing accuracy was lacking. He did exhibit his toughness with a touchdown run just before halftime, finishing the day with 31 completions on 45 attempts for 255 yards, a touchdown, and three picks.

With another game against the Cowboys in Dallas on Thanksgiving in just four days, Commanders ownership might need to have tough discussions about the future of Ron Rivera and his staff sooner than later.

Despite Washington generating nine sacks, nearly tying a franchise record, they still found themselves trailing by two scores for much of the fourth quarter. While there was a slight comeback attempt late in the game, this defeat does not provide many positives to focus on.

As the saying goes, “You can’t lose at home to a third-string QB and keep your job.” Well, maybe it should be a saying after all.
