Walrus Calf Rescued, Unfortunately Passes After Receiving Round-the-Clock Care and Cuddles

  • A rare walrus calf has tragically passed away after receiving intensive care from the Alaska SeaLife Center.
  • To provide a sense of maternal closeness, Alaskan researchers dedicated 24/7 care and cuddles to the calf.
  • Weighing 200 pounds and approximately one month old, the calf was rescued by researchers on August 1.

A rare Pacific walrus calf sadly passed away on Friday despite the round-the-clock care and cuddles provided by researchers after being rescued earlier this month.

Rescued on August 1 by the Alaska SeaLife Center, the calf, weighing 200 pounds and estimated to be just one month old, was found alone four miles inland from the Beaufort Sea in northern Alaska. During its 11-day stay at the center, the calf experienced malnutrition and a potential infection.

In the hours leading up to its death, the calf developed low blood sugar and gastrointestinal issues, as reported by the Alaska SeaLife Center in an August 11 press release. A necropsy will be conducted in the coming days to determine the exact cause of death.

“While wildlife rescue can be rewarding, it also carries the potential for great loss,” stated the press release. “This is the most challenging aspect of the job for those dedicated to animal care.”

During its time at the center, the calf received round-the-clock care and cuddles to replicate the maternal closeness crucial for walrus calves during their first two years of life. On August 5, a spokesperson for the center confirmed to Insider that the calf had been consuming a bottle and eating well.
