Viral Video: Lethal Company’s Proximity Chat in Steam Hit Game Praised as ‘Awesome’

The latest viral sensation from Steam’s hit game Lethal Company features an uproariously funny and lauded proximity voice chat.

YouTube user Sej uploaded the clip, titled Time to Go, and it’s been widely shared across social media and the gaming forum website ResetEra. On X/Twitter, a single post of the video has already garnered 1.6 million views since being published on November 21.

“This might be one of the greatest game clips of all time,” said Kalentan, who shared the video on ResetEra. “Lethal Company does indeed look awesome, with amazing [voice chat] implementation and sound design,” read one reply.

Lethal Company is a cooperative sci-fi horror game about scavenging, where players take on the role of contracted workers for a corporate entity. Their mission is to collect scrap from abandoned moons in order to meet a corporate profit quota.

The clip showcases two workers navigating dark corridors, encountering a massive spider-like creature. They hastily retreat, yelling “it’s time to go” to their teammate further back in the corridor.

The game’s proximity voice chat only allows players to hear each other when they are close, setting it apart from most games where voices are broadcasted to all players on a team regardless of their location on the map. As the two players sprint back, their friend hears frantic shouting and asks: “Why? What? What?”

The unsuspecting third player lets out a scream as his teammates rush out the exit, creating a comical fade into the distance courtesy of the proximity voice chat.

“I know nothing about Lethal Company except for this video and I’ve been laughing at it for hours,” said Dreambourn on X/Twitter. “The reverb is so perfect it is sending me.”

Lethal Company was released in Steam Early Access on October 23 and experienced a surge in popularity, reaching over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam on November 20.
