Aug. 23 (UPI) — A Swedish man has achieved a remarkable feat by consuming 13.85 ounces of fermented fish within a minute, setting a new Guinness World Record. The impressive accomplishment took place during a speed eating competition organized by the Disgusting Food Museum in Malmö.
The contest centered around surströmming, a traditional Swedish delicacy comprised of fermented herring that is salted to just the right extent to prevent it from rotting. Known for its pungent aroma, the fish has the reputation of inducing vomiting solely from its smell, according to the museum.
A representative from the museum informed Guinness World Records that the main challenge was to avoid vomiting while attempting to consume a large quantity of the fish within a short timeframe.
The competition had vomit buckets conveniently placed nearby, but it was Swedish man Sune Valentin Norlin, 71, who emerged as the victor. Norlin managed to consume 13.85 ounces of surströmming without regurgitating.
In an interview with Sydsvenskan newspaper, Norlin shared his eating strategy simply: “You’ve just got to swallow it.”
By achieving this incredible feat, Norlin secured the Guinness World Record for consuming the most fermented herring in one minute.
The museum spokesperson commended Norlin for his exceptional focus, strong stomach, and unwavering determination. They stated that Norlin has earned a place among the legends at the museum and that his inspiring accomplishment will be celebrated for years to come.
