In a new twist to a controversial case, a trade worker named Peter Dunlevie has recently parted with his DANOUT personalised number plates that took a sly swipe at the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews. The motorist had already paid and registered for the plates on his 2003 Holden Commodore, which were deemed “offensive” and subsequently cancelled by VicRoads six months ago. After he lost his appeal against the decision, Mr Dunlevie was told he had until Monday to surrender the plates to VicRoads or face vehicle registration suspension and eventual cancellation. Despite hoping to retain his beloved number plates which had gathered significant attention and support, Mr Dunlevie had no choice but to comply with the order.
The decision by VicRoads came days before the Victorian state election, where Mr Andrews secured a third term in power despite enduring six lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While Mr Dunlevie argued that the plates weren’t offensive and that VicRoads was the only one who took issue with them, the authority maintained that they contained a “negative and/or inappropriate social message”. Mr Dunlevie, a father of two, stated that he had received no actual threats or negative comments about his number plates. In fact, he had received many positive responses, particularly from people who share his sentiment towards the premier.
As Mr Dunlevie reluctantly handed back his number plates on Thursday, he warned that his fight with VicRoads was still “sort of” ongoing. Interestingly, Mr Dunlevie still has his RUDDUD plates registered from 2008, which took a sharp dig at a former Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd. Whilst the case of Mr Dunlevie appears to be over, he isn’t the only driver who has expressed public disapproval of the Premier. Photos of a Holden Commodore adorned with Sack Daniel Andrews and Save Victoria stickers that featured his DANOUT number plates did the rounds across Melbourne in 2022. Despite this, the majority of Victorians seem to overlook these trick plates and support the current Victoria Premier.
