Telecom giant Verizon is currently experiencing a widespread outage, causing thousands of Americans to lose access to their smartphones, internet, and even local emergency services.

Customers began reporting issues around 8 am ET, and Verizon has acknowledged the problem and is actively working to address it.

‘Outages are inherently unpredictable and often beyond our control,’ stated Verizon on its support account. ‘We are working diligently to restore service as quickly as possible, but sometimes the resolution takes longer than expected.’

The cause of the outage is currently unknown.

DownDetector, a website that monitors online outages, shows that 57% of reported problems are related to mobile phones, 25% are related to mobile internet, and 19% of users are experiencing no signal at all.

The outage is primarily affecting the eastern coast of the US, with major cities like New York City, Washington DC, and Boston, Massachusetts experiencing the most disruption.

While DownDetector indicates that problems began around 8 am, some users have reported being without internet service as early as 6 am.

A Verizon customer in Philadelphia expressed frustration on X at 8:20 am, saying, ‘Verizon, what’s going on with my WiFi? It’s been down for almost 2 hours, and when I try to contact someone, it’s an hour wait to speak with a representative.’

Police stations in Bartlett, Tennessee have notified residents that the outage is affecting their ability to receive calls, but 911 calls are still going through.

Similar notifications have been shared by the Cleveland Police regarding their non-emergency number.

Police stations across the country are posting similar messages on X, formerly known as Twitter.
