The Tri-City ValleyCats exhibited an exceptional display of power-hitting, crushing eight home runs, inclusive of three astounding blows by designated hitter Carson McCusker, in an unbelievable 24-12 triumph over the Gateway Grizzles, in Sauget, Ill- closing a successful six-game road trip.
Despite trailing behind 12-7 for the majority of the game, the ValleyCats’ meteoric rise to success was aided by a whopping nine-run explosion in the eighth inning, followed by an eight-run barrage in the ninth inning.
The defining moment came when Tri-City third baseman Pavin Parks obliterated a 12-12 deadlock with a crushing two-run shot in the eighth inning. In addition, monumental homers by Jaxon Hallmark, Cito Culver, Aaron Altherr, and Pat Adams immensely contributed to the ValleyCats’ phenomenal win.
During the game, Tri-City (14-13) narrowly missed breaking the Frontier League’s record for most home runs in a single game, a record held by New York Boulders, set in their clash against the ValleyCats on July 12 of the last season, with the ValleyCats just one homer shy of the pinnacle.
Carson McCusker, who masterfully wielded his bat at the plate, not only managed a considerable seven RBI but also spearheaded the team to an unprecedented victory. Altherr and Adams were not far behind, each scoring an impressive five RBI. Furthermore, Adams elevated his performance by hitting an incredible grand slam in the ninth inning, bringing the score to 21-12 before McCusker effortlessly sealed their win with a three-run blast.
Additionally, McCusker, Culver, and Altherr had four hits each, enabling the ValleyCats to amass 24 hits overall.
Tri-City’s reliever, Matt Dunaway, despite giving up four runs on three hits and two walks in the seventh innings, was still able to secure his first victory with the team as the ValleyCats rallied to claim the day.
Gateway (19-7) dominated the game initially, establishing an 8-2 lead after four innings, but this did not deter the ValleyCats’ indomitable spirit as McCusker and Altherr each showed their might, hitting two-run homers in the fifth inning to close the gap and drawing the ValleyCats within 8-6.
The ValleyCats’ heartfelt jubilation was an apt reflection of their grit and determination, as they return to the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Tuesday to start their next intriguing six-game homestand against the Lake Erie Crushers.
