TROY – The Tri-City ValleyCats have been struggling to maintain consistency in the Frontier League season. In their last eight games, they have been alternating wins and losses and haven’t been two games over .500 since their 2-0 start. However, in their series finale against the Lake Erie Crushers, the ValleyCats showed signs of improvement.
Starting pitcher Dwayne Marshall and two relievers had an impressive performance, holding down the Crushers while the Tri-City offense hit three home runs. This led to a 9-2 victory, marking their second consecutive win. It had been a while since the ValleyCats had back-to-back victories, with their last one being on June 3 and 4 against Empire State.
ValleyCats leftfielder Aaron Altherr expressed the importance of consistency in baseball and how the team has been making progress in that area over the past week and a half. Trey Hair’s three-run homer in the fourth inning gave the ValleyCats the lead, and Pavin Parks and Altherr followed with their own impressive home runs, showcasing their exit velocities.
While Altherr acknowledged a preference for higher-altitude home runs, he was still pleased with his laser shot to left field. Despite not being a dominant performance, Marshall bounced back from a tough outing against Gateway and helped keep the team in the game.
ValleyCats manager Pete Incaviglia made a timely pitching change, bringing in reliever Elliot Carney to face an old teammate. Carney successfully got Kemuel Thomas-Rivera to fly out to deep center, preventing the Crushers from staging a comeback. Carney, along with Aaron Ernst, pitched shutout innings to secure the win.
Incaviglia expressed satisfaction with the offensive contributions from players who had slow starts, such as Parks, and believes that the team’s best is yet to come. The focus now is on maintaining consistency and reaching their full potential.
Overall, the ValleyCats showed improvement on their road to consistency with a convincing win over the Crushers.
