USC Student’s Shooting by Homeowner Was Deemed Justified

The shooting and killing of 20-year-old University of South Carolina student, Nicolas Anthony Donofrio, early Saturday has been deemed a justifiable homicide by the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office and the Columbia Police Department. According to police, Donofrio attempted to enter the wrong home on the street where he had recently moved into a frat house. He repeatedly knocked, banged, and kicked at the front door before breaking the glass window and reaching inside to manipulate the doorknob. The homeowner, perceiving Donofrio as a burglar, shot him in the upper body through the broken door window. As a result, no charges will be filed against the homeowner.

The Columbia Police Chief, Skip Holbrook, described the case as “heartbreaking” for all parties involved. The police determined that the homeowner acted within their rights to protect their home and the shooting was justified. The female resident called 911 while the male homeowner retrieved a firearm for personal and home protection. Donofrio’s family, who hails from Madison, Connecticut, expressed their devastation over the loss of their son, describing him as a sweet, intelligent, and good-hearted individual. In honor of Donofrio, his fraternity, Phi Kappa Sigma, launched a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over $119,000 for scholarships at USC and his high school in Connecticut. Despite his short time with them, Donofrio made a significant impact on everyone’s lives.
