An American tourist is under fire on TikTok for likening a trip to the Amalfi coast in southern Italy to “literal manual labor.”

Lexi Jordan, a woman from Denver who documents her travels and lifestyle on social media, posted a video on TikTok criticizing content creators for selectively portraying the positive aspects of visiting the Amalfi coast while neglecting to mention the difficulties involved in getting there. The video, uploaded on Tuesday, has amassed nearly 400,000 views and over 32,000 comments.

Jordan expressed frustration with influencers and TikTokers who featured the Amalfi coast on her “For You” page over the past two months, claiming that reaching the destination seemed impossible. She stated, “Every single influencer and TikToker who put the Amalfi coast on my For You page over the last two months deserves jail time.”

Jordan outlined the complexities of traveling to the Amalfi coast, highlighting the need to fly into Naples, then take a train to Sorrento, and finally board a ferry with luggage amidst sweltering weather. She also mentioned the challenge of climbing 160 stairs to access the coastline, as there are no streets or cars available. To conclude, Jordan remarked, “All the power went out because the Amalfi coast doesn’t have the infrastructure to support this tourism.”

TikTok users criticized Jordan for failing to conduct thorough research before her trip to Italy. One user pointed out the common knowledge of packing light and expecting extensive walking and stairs in Europe. Another user suggested that Jordan should have done research beyond watching TikToks. However, some commentators agreed with Jordan, acknowledging the difficulties of traveling to the Amalfi coast and sharing personal struggles they faced.

According to CEIC Data, approximately 50 million people visited Italy in 2021, with the Amalfi coast being one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting around 5 million visitors annually. The hashtag #amalficoast has surpassed one billion views on TikTok, with tourists regularly posting videos of their experiences.

Insider reached out to Lexi Jordan for comment but received no immediate response.
