Tennis player Andy Murray has called on the US Open to address issues with its new video review (VR) technology, which malfunctioned during his first-round victory over Corentin Moutet on Tuesday.
Murray had the opportunity to win the match in the third set when his opponent asked the umpire to review a double bounce call.
Following the tournament’s new protocol, chair umpire Louise Engzell attempted to use a small screen to watch an instant replay of the point.
However, Engzell informed the players after a delay that her tablet was not functioning properly and she couldn’t review the call.
The US Open is conducting a pilot of video review technology on selected courts at Flushing Meadows this year.
According to a document on the US Open website, instant replays are intended to assist chair umpires in making judgment calls.
However, in this instance, that was not possible.
“It didn’t go as planned at a crucial moment in the match, so it would be beneficial if they could resolve that issue,” Murray told reporters afterwards.
While the umpire’s video screen was not working, replays of the point were displayed on the big screens inside the Grandstand Stadium.
Both the players and the crowd were able to view the footage of the close call.
