The Trump campaign was forced to backtrack on its claim that former President Donald Trump purchased a Glock pistol at a South Carolina gun shop. The legality of such a purchase is questionable due to Trump’s multiple felony charges.
In a now-deleted tweet, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung shared a video of Trump at the Palmetto State Armory in Summerville, holding a Glock and expressing interest in buying one. However, Cheung later clarified that Trump did not purchase or take possession of the firearm.
Firearms expert Stephen Gutowski argued that it would be a crime for Trump to buy a Glock while under felony indictment. He explained that individuals facing felony charges are not allowed to receive or buy new firearms.
Despite differing court opinions on the constitutionality of laws prohibiting gun purchases for those under indictment, Gutowski pointed out that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals had yet to issue a decision on the matter.
Gutowski also highlighted that the Fifth Circuit Court has been skeptical of federal firearms restrictions since the Supreme Court’s ruling last year, which deemed New York’s regulations on obtaining a concealed handgun license unconstitutionally restrictive.
