In his testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, Jonathan Turley, the renowned law professor at George Washington University and longstanding contributor to the New York Post, argued that there is sufficient suspicion surrounding President Biden to warrant an impeachment investigation. Here is an excerpt from his opening statement:
This hearing is not about articles of impeachment.
In my previous statements, I have expressed my belief that an impeachment inquiry is necessary. However, I do not believe that the current evidence meets the standard of a high crime and misdemeanor required for an article of impeachment.
My testimony acknowledges that, after months of investigation, the House has crossed the threshold for an inquiry into whether President Joe Biden was directly involved in or benefited from the corrupt practices of his son, Hunter, and others.
I believe that the evidence has progressed to the point where the House must address troubling questions regarding the President.
At the start, I want to highlight a few of these allegations that collectively justify a formal inquiry.
The existing record contains witness testimonies and written evidence that the President:
- Lied about crucial facts regarding these foreign dealings
- Was the focal point of a multimillion-dollar influence peddling scheme
- Potentially benefited from this corruption through millions of dollars directed to his family and possibly received other direct benefits
While the President may be able to refute or challenge these points, they raise valid concerns about his involvement based on the accounts of key individuals involved.
Let’s consider just 10 revelations from the previous investigation:
- Hunter Biden and his associates operated an influence peddling operation, using Joe Biden as a figurehead. This generated millions of dollars from some of the world’s most corrupt figures, including associates later accused or convicted of public corruption.
- Some of Biden’s clients lobbied for changes that affected US foreign policy and relations, including assistance in dealing with Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin, who was investigating corruption.
- President Biden repeatedly made false claims about his awareness of these dealings, including denying any knowledge of Hunter’s foreign transactions. However, this has been declared false by Archer and verified by The Washington Post and other media outlets.
- The President was aware for years that Hunter Biden and his uncle James were accused of influence peddling. There is even an audiotape of the President acknowledging a New York Times investigation as a threat to Hunter.
- President Biden was frequently called into meetings with these foreign clients, participating through speakerphone, and encountered these clients and foreign figures during dinners and meetings.
- Emails and other communications show Hunter invoking his father’s name to secure payments from foreign sources. In one message, he even threatens a Chinese figure, claiming his father is sitting beside him, in order to coerce a large money transfer.
- A reliable FBI source reported a direct claim by a corrupt Ukrainian businessman that he paid a “bribe” to Joe Biden via intermediaries.
- Hunter Biden allegedly stated that he had to give half of his earnings to his father. Emails also suggest that their finances were intertwined, with shared accounts used to pay bills, including a possible credit account used by Hunter to pay for prostitutes.
- In 2019, at least two funds transfers were made to Hunter Biden from a Chinese source, mentioning the President’s home in Delaware where Hunter occasionally lived and conducted business.
- Hunter managed deals that could potentially benefit his father, including obtaining office space in Washington. Reportedly, nine Biden family members, including grandchildren, received money from these foreign transfers. Hunter himself received substantial transfers of money and extravagant gifts such as a valuable diamond and a luxury car.
These are merely some of the serious corruption allegations confronting the President, but each of them could constitute impeachable conduct if a link to the President can be established.
