An investigation has been launched by Major League Baseball into the arrest of Julio Urías, a pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who was charged with felony corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, according to the AP. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the felony charge, but the arresting agency, the Department of Public Safety, has not yet provided details of the arrest. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated before their game, “For us, now it’s day to day. I don’t want to get too far ahead of things” while addressing the absence of Urías, who did not join the team on their trip to Miami. His next start was scheduled for Thursday.
Urías was arrested by Department of Public Safety officers in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, on Sunday night. He was released on $50,000 bail early Monday morning and is expected to appear in court on September 27. The charge of corporal injury on a spouse involves the willful use of physical force to cause bodily injury. This is not Urías’ first run-in with the law, as he was also arrested for domestic battery in May 2019. MLB suspended Urías for 20 games, but he was not prosecuted by the Los Angeles city attorney under the condition that he complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program. Since the establishment of MLB’s domestic violence policy in 2015, no player has been suspended twice. (Read more Los Angeles Dodgers stories).
