Artificial intelligence has taken a significant step forward in its abilities, with researchers from the University of Texas at Austin training an AI model to decipher the gist of limited range of sentences as individuals listen to them. The program used fMRI scans of people listening to – or even just recalling – sentences from three shows, then it used that brain-imaging data to reconstruct the content of those sentences. The model was also able to look at fMRI data of people watching short films and write approximate summaries, suggesting the AI was capturing not individual words but underlying meanings. The ultimate goal is to help restore communication to people who have lost the ability to speak.
