Hunter Biden Indicted, House Republicans Open Impeachment Inquiry Against President Biden
Last week brought major developments in American politics. Hunter Biden has finally been indicted, and House Republicans have initiated an impeachment inquiry against President Biden. However, the most significant revelation was the media’s immunity to embarrassment.
A demand from the White House urging news outlets to increase their scrutiny of the GOP uncovered the underlying assumption that the Washington press corps can be relied upon to rescue a failing Democratic president. This assumption serves as a massive insult to media outlets that claim to be free from bias.
It is peculiar that there was no media outrage over the expectation that they would carry out the president’s bidding. The lack of protest reveals an unspoken acceptance of partisan bias. This letter from the White House was not a trivial matter; it exposed the media’s unfairness and double standards.
Axios, in particular, responded strangely to the letter by providing friendly political advice to the White House, suggesting that such demands should be made privately to avoid the appearance of kowtowing. This reaction only further highlights the media’s complacency.
The Media’s Protection Wavers
It is worth considering whether the press corps attracts leftists or molds them. The answer is undoubtedly both. However, there is good news — even if biased coverage is temporarily boosted by the White House’s demands, the media can no longer shield Joe Biden and his family from their own questionable actions.
The protection racket aimed at insulating the Bidens from scrutiny has failed. If the media had succeeded, Hunter Biden would have evaded consequences for his illegal purchase of a pistol while battling drug addiction. However, his preferential treatment and proposed plea deal have been exposed, likely leading to additional charges on taxes and other matters.
Despite efforts by media censors, including Big Tech and even the FBI, to suppress reporting by The Post regarding the Biden family’s foreign business ventures, the public has seen through the cover-up and now believes that Joe Biden is involved in corrupt activities.
Recent polls demonstrate this sentiment. A YouGov/The Economist poll conducted in August revealed that 72% of Americans believe Hunter personally profited from his father’s positions in government, including a majority of Democrats. Moreover, a CNN poll in early September found that 61% of respondents believe Joe Biden was involved in his son’s business dealings with Ukraine and China while serving as vice president.
The majority of the public sees Joe Biden’s actions as illegal or, at the very least, unethical. The media, with their press passes and keyboards, have failed to protect the “Big Guy.”
Efforts to Kill the Impeachment Probe
Despite their failure, the media has not given up. The usual suspects are already attempting to undermine the impeachment probe before it even begins. The New York Times published an article titled, “Witness Testimony Casts Doubt on Some Biden Impeachment Allegations,” which was based on notes taken by Democratic congressional aides.
Similarly, an Associated Press reporter questioned Speaker Kevin McCarthy about the lack of an “impeachable offense,” parroting the White House’s line of questioning. However, McCarthy reminded the reporter that the purpose of the impeachment probe is to find answers, not already have them.
While these challenges illustrate the obstacles Republicans face in making their case to the public, there is a clear path forward. Compelling evidence must be presented demonstrating that the president either shared in the profits from his son’s schemes or took official actions to reward their foreign investors.
If such evidence is revealed, Joe Biden’s support among Democrats will crumble, and there may be enough Senate votes to convict and remove him from office. However, it is more likely that Biden will abort the process himself.
President Harris?
One potential scenario is for Biden to pardon Hunter and announce that he will not seek a second term. A speech in which he defends his troubled son while falling on his sword may satisfy his media allies and buy him some time.
However, this half-hearted measure may not be sufficient. Democratic leaders may fear that Biden’s continued presence in office could lead to a Republican wave in the next election. In that case, his last card to play would be to resign in an effort to avoid a GOP sweep and potential prosecution.
Ultimately, the timing is crucial. The primaries begin in January, giving Biden only a few months to make a decision and allow alternatives to emerge if he withdraws from the race.
Of course, none of these scenarios are guaranteed. Republicans could inadvertently harm their own cause by provoking a long-lasting government shutdown, which may generate sympathy for the president and provide the media with a new distraction to demonize the GOP.
Moreover, there is a slim chance that the GOP will be unable to find clear evidence of a quid pro quo or financial benefit for Joe Biden in his son’s schemes. While unlikely, politics, like life, offers no guarantees.
