Many Still Choose to Drive in Dublin City Despite Availability of Public Transport
A recent survey conducted by Liberty Insurance has shed light on the transportation preferences of Dublin city residents. It seems that despite the availability of public transport options, a large majority of individuals still heavily rely on their cars.
In fact, a staggering 77% of respondents stated that a car is “absolutely necessary” for their day-to-day commute. Only a mere 2% disagreed with this sentiment. It is clear that there exists a prevailing mindset among Dubliners that having a car is a non-negotiable necessity.
This statistic struck me as particularly noteworthy when I went for a walk along a busy road last Thursday. Much to my surprise, the majority of vehicles I observed crawling through heavy traffic were occupied solely by a single driver. This is not the first time I have noticed this phenomenon, and it is truly baffling to consider that so many individuals continue to clog up our already congested roads with their personal vehicles.
One cannot argue that car-sharing or utilizing public transport is impossible for the vast majority of these drivers. Yet, they seem to be unwilling to explore these alternative options, even when their ultimate destination is central Dublin. It is disheartening to learn that only 22% of people currently choose to use public transportation, as indicated by the survey.
Granted, I understand that residing in rural areas may limit the feasibility of relying solely on public transport. However, the overall results of the survey are mind-boggling when one considers the concerted efforts made by the Government to incentivize the use of buses and trains, alongside the exorbitant parking fees in many parts of greater Dublin.
Speaking for myself, I have reached a point where I would go to great lengths to avoid venturing into the city center. While there are plans in place to eventually make central Dublin mostly car-free, I cannot shake the feeling that a future Liberty survey may still uncover a significant number of individuals who stubbornly believe that owning a car is an absolute necessity.
