Iran ranks as the country with the highest cost of happiness in the world, according to a recent survey. Researchers have identified the optimal salary that individuals in 173 countries need annually to achieve happiness, beyond which money has no effect. Natives in Iran require a salary of approximately £200,000 per year to be satisfied. In contrast, those living in Sierra Leone only need an income of £6,931 per year to maintain happiness. Other countries in the top ten include Yemen, Australia, Zimbabwe, Norway, Switzerland, New Zealand, Israel, Iceland, and the United States. The study also compares happiness levels and salaries in British cities and towns, with London, Cambridge, and Guildford topping the list. The study concludes that happiness is most affordable in Sierra Leone and least affordable in Iran.
While this research challenges the popular saying that money can’t buy happiness, another study by foreign exchange provider S Money suggests that happiness is most affordable in Sierra Leone, where an income of £6,931 per year is enough to be content. Suriname and Madagascar follow closely with yearly incomes of £8,210 and £9,090, respectively. The study further ranks the cheapest US city for happiness as Knoxville, Tennessee, with an annual cost of happiness of £70,482. Santa Barbara, California, on the other hand, has the highest cost of happiness in the US, at £130,276 per year.
In the UK, happiness is cheapest in Leicester, where a yearly income of £61,117 is enough to be content. London, however, tops the list of costly happiness, with individuals needing £79,524 per year to stay happy. Cambridge and Guildford follow with respective yearly incomes of £74,808 and £74,273. The study utilized a Purdue University analysis of the relationship between happiness and income as well as data from the World Gallup poll to determine the price of happiness in each country and city.
