Ubisoft’s Beyond Good & Evil video game is celebrating its 20th Anniversary with a surprise appearance on Microsoft’s Xbox store. The unannounced game made an overnight appearance with a selection of screenshots before being swiftly taken down by Microsoft.
The internet quickly caught wind of this news, of course, and the details were shared online, including by prominent gaming personality Wario64 on X/Twitter. According to the now-removed listing, the Anniversary Edition boasts a 4K resolution, 60 frames per second performance, and various enhancements such as improved graphics, controls, audio, autosave, and cross-save features. It also seems to include a new speedrun mode and updated achievements.

The official description of the game reads, “Swoop into the marvelous world of Hillys as action-reporter Jade to investigate the mysterious DomZ alien attacks alongside colorful characters, like her adoptive uncle Pey’j or the valiant Double H.” The game allows players to enjoy the adventure with enhanced visuals and gameplay, offering new rewards, speedrun mode, and updated achievements.
The much-anticipated game leverages Smart Delivery, providing access to both the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X and S titles.
Beyond Good & Evil was first released on November 11, 2003. Despite this not coinciding with the actual 20th anniversary, fans can likely expect an official announcement and launch soon. IGN has reached out to Ubisoft for comment.
The game is also expected to be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, as indicated by a previous rating from the Electronic Software Ratings Board (ESRB).
The long-awaited sequel, Beyond Good & Evil 2, was officially announced in 2017 and has been in development in various capacities since then. Reports suggest the game is still in pre-production, raising questions about its release date. Nevertheless, Ubisoft’s silent updates have clouded any certainty surrounding the game’s development.
In a glowing review, IGN once said, “While it’s over a bit before you’d want it to be, Beyond Good & Evil tells its story with amazing pizzazz and polish. Even better, it’s a story well worth telling.”
