- Britney Spears fans are reevaluating the significance of her song “Everytime” and its music video amid revelations that she had an abortion while in a relationship with Justin Timberlake from 1999 to 2002.
- Speculation has arisen among fans that the song may be about her abortion.
Britney Spears fans are reconsidering the meaning of her song “Everytime” and its music video following her revelation that she underwent an abortion while in a relationship with Justin Timberlake.
Spears and Timberlake began dating in 1999 when she was 17 and he was 18. They ended their relationship in 2002.
Shortly after their breakup, Timberlake released his single “Cry Me a River” in 2002. The music video features a woman who resembles Spears cheating on Timberlake with another man.
Subsequently, Spears released “Everytime,” which fans speculated at the time was a response to Timberlake’s song.
“Every time I see you in my dreams, I see your face, you’re haunting me. I guess I need you, baby,” she sings in the track.
During an interview with MTV in 2004, Spears said the following about the song: “It’s about heartbreak, it’s about your first love, your first true love. That’s something all people can relate to because you all have that first love that you think you’re going to be with the rest of your life.”
However, the 41-year-old star has never confirmed if the song is about Timberlake, and now fans are theorizing that it could be about her pregnancy after her abortion revelation.
“Everytime” by Britney Spears now carries a different meaning. It could be interpreted as a lullaby expressing her need for her unborn baby, stated one fan on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Another fan pointed out, “In Britney’s ‘Everytime’ video, she is seen carrying a large baby pink bag in front of her stomach and later throws it away during a fight. At the end of the video, her baby girl is born.”
A Britney Spears fan page shared a video of Spears performing the song, in which she appears to caress her stomach.
“It all makes sense now,” they wrote.
Another fan speculated, “So, Britney Spears’ ‘Everytime’ is actually a lullaby for her unborn child with Justin Timberlake. This completely changes the meaning of the song. She’s drowning herself to be with her baby; that’s my interpretation of the song and music video.”
The news of Spears’ abortion was reported by People on Tuesday.
In an excerpt from her upcoming memoir published by the magazine, Spears reveals that she had the abortion because Timberlake expressed his unpreparedness for fatherhood.
“It was a surprise, but it wasn’t a tragedy for me. I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This just happened much earlier than I had anticipated,” Spears writes in “The Woman In Me,” as reported by People.
“But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy,” she adds. “He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”
Spears goes on to express uncertainty about whether aborting the child was the right decision.
“If it had been up to me alone, I never would have done it,” she writes. “But Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.”
A representative for Timberlake has not yet responded to Insider’s request for comment.
