Portrait of Kit
The Portrait of Kit, painted by Sir William Orpen in 1912, is a remarkable piece from The Irish News Collection. This collection, owned by the late Jim Fitzpatrick, former owner of The Irish News, spans over 40 years and is now being featured in Bonhams’ first-ever sale on the island. With an estimated value of €80,000 to €120,000, this portrait depicts Orpen’s daughter Christine when she was six years old.
Another notable piece in the collection is the annotated typescripts from James Joyce’s novel, Finnegan’s Wake, with an estimated value of €40,000 to €60,000. Additionally, there is a bust of Michael Collins sculpted by Francis William Doyle Jones, which is estimated to be worth €5,000 to €10,000.

Hermes by Norah O’Kelly
At Adam’s Important Irish Art Sale on September 27, Norah O’Kelly’s Hermes exceeded expectations. This composite artwork, comprised of enamel panels and metalwork on a stained timber shield, had an estimated value of €800 to €1,200 but sold for an impressive €12,000.
O’Kelly, an artist born in 1886, is often overlooked but deserving of rediscovery. In 1916, she exhibited three landscapes of India at the RHA, hinting at a time when she may have lived and worked as an art teacher. Despite the mystery surrounding her, her talent shines through her work. To learn more, visit adams.ie.
