On Friday, families of the victims will join County Supervisor Holly Mitchell and local residents to observe the one-year anniversary of a tragic accident in the Windsor Hills area. The crash resulted in the death of six people, including an infant, a pregnant woman, and her unborn child.
The commemorative event will take place near the intersection of La Brea and Slauson avenues, close to Ladera Park. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell’s office has announced that the highlight of the event will be the unveiling of the Slauson Six Memorial Bench and Community Garden. Activist Najee Ali and members of the community will also be present at the ceremony, which is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
The devastating crash occurred on August 4, 2022, when a speeding Mercedes-Benz ran a red light at the intersection of La Brea and Slauson. Authorities estimated the vehicle’s speed to be nearly 100 mph, far exceeding the 35 mph speed limit.
The collision resulted in a fiery inferno as the Mercedes-Benz collided with a sedan, pushing it into at least one other vehicle. The vehicles involved in the crash were eventually stuck against a gas station sign at the corner, causing a trail of fire. In total, eight vehicles, including the Mercedes-Benz, were involved in the collision. Eight individuals sustained injuries as a result of the accident.
Nicole Lorraine Linton, a traveling nurse from Texas, survived the crash with moderate injuries. She was subsequently arrested by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) on the day of the accident. Linton is currently in custody without bail and faces six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. A preliminary hearing to evaluate the evidence against Linton is scheduled for September 12 in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom. Reports indicate that Linton’s attorney has mentioned her mental health issues.
The crash claimed the lives of several individuals, including Asherey Ryan, a 23-year-old pregnant woman from Los Angeles. Ryan’s one-year-old son, Alonzo Quintero, and her boyfriend, Reynold Lester, who was the father of her unborn child, also tragically lost their lives. Another car involved in the collision carried Nathesia Lewis, 43, and her friend Lynette Noble, 38, who both perished in the accident.
In response to the crash, community activists gathered at the intersection to create a memorial using candles and flowers. Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable and a resident in the area, spoke to reporters, highlighting the historically dangerous nature of the intersection due to speeding vehicles and occasional street takeovers.
About a month after the crash, the Board of Supervisors called for investigations and immediate measures to address the issue of speeding and safety on this and other high-risk roads.
In a motion filed at the time, Supervisor Holly Mitchell expressed her concerns about the increased number of traffic fatalities during the COVID-19 pandemic and the prevalence of reckless speeding, street takeovers, and erratic driver behavior. She emphasized the need to explore additional infrastructure improvements and hold individuals accountable to prevent dangerous driving behavior and save lives.
