Unsuccessful Cruise Ship Rescue Attempt: Smaller Boat Fails to Liberate Stuck Vessel

  • Rescuers failed to dislodge a stuck cruise ship in Greenland with a smaller boat
  • A luxury cruise ship named Ocean Explorer ran aground in a remote part of Greenland
  • The cruise operator confirmed that three passengers on board have tested positive for COVID-19

Rescuers failed to free a luxury cruise ship that got stuck in Greenland with a smaller boat on Wednesday.

Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command stated on the same day that a research vessel named Tarajoq attempted to pull the Ocean Explorer cruise ship off the ground during high tide but was unsuccessful.

Tarajoq is primarily used for sea exploration and offshore research, measuring approximately 200 feet in length compared to the 343-foot-long Ocean Explorer.

The Ocean Explorer, carrying 206 people, ran aground and became stuck in a remote part of Greenland on Monday.

The Joint Arctic Command’s top priority is to send the inspection vessel Knud Rasmussen to the accident site, but it is currently 1,200 nautical miles away and slowed down due to weather conditions. The ship is expected to arrive on Friday evening.

A representative from Aurora Expeditions confirmed that three passengers on board the cruise ship have tested positive for COVID-19. However, they are in isolation and being well taken care of by the onboard medical team and crew.

Passenger Gina Hill, in an interview with The Guardian, expressed that despite the circumstances, people aboard the cruise ship remain upbeat and well-informed.
