Scientists Seek Participants to Understand Unique Differences in Accents between Blackburn and Burnley
In a fascinating new study, scientists from the University of Lancaster are eager to uncover the mystery behind the distinct accents of two neighboring towns in Northern England – Burnley and Blackburn. These accents, despite being just 10 miles apart, exhibit surprising dissimilarities that pique the researchers’ curiosity.
To shed light on this linguistic phenomenon, the team plans to employ advanced ultrasound technology to scan the mouths of individuals with both accents. Professor Claire Nance, leading the research study, explains that by analyzing tongue shapes through ultrasound imaging, they can delve into the variations in pronunciation and different types of accents.
The study aims to capture the essence of both accents through meticulous examination, and to accomplish this, the researchers need willing participants. Burnley locals are invited to have their mouths scanned at Burnley Market Hall on 11th November. During the scan, participants will be asked to read words on a computer screen while a small ultrasound device observes their tongue movements.
A similar research project was undertaken in Blackburn last year, and the results were eye-opening. “We were told in no uncertain terms that people in Burnley and nearby Blackburn speak very differently,” Professor Nance reveals. “This research excites us as we seek to uncover the intricacies of this divergence. We aim to recruit 30 to 40 volunteers aged 6+ to compare with the previous 35 participants from Blackburn, and we especially welcome families and individuals from the South Asian community to contribute to our understanding of the rich tapestry of accents in East Lancashire.”
The entire activity lasts approximately 15 minutes and is suitable for both adults and children. Everyone is encouraged to participate and contribute to this captivating research.
Interestingly, this study comes at a time when researchers have highlighted the decline of Northern accents in Britain. Scientists from the Universities of Portsmouth and Cambridge predict that by 2066, posh south-eastern pronunciations may replace the distinctive northern accents. According to their physics-based model, the pronunciations of certain words, such as “strut” and “farm,” are projected to undergo significant changes, while the varying pronunciations of “bath” are expected to persist.
As language evolves across the country, it becomes crucial to preserve and understand the unique accents that define regional identities. By unraveling the complexity behind accents, this study offers valuable insights into our linguistic heritage and the ways in which it shapes our cultural identity.
Experience the excitement of exploration and contribute to the unraveling of a linguistic enigma by participating in this groundbreaking research.
