Unmasking the Controversy: How Gen Zers Critique Celebrities Supporting Israel

  • Early Saturday, Hamas launched an attack on Israel. Israel retaliated by declaring a “state of war.”
  • Since then, notable personalities including Madonna, Ashley Tisdale, and Sofia Richie have shown support for Israel.
  • However, some of their young fans are criticizing their stance and urging them to support Palestine instead.

On Saturday, Hamas, a Palestinian political and military organization, launched a sudden and unexpected assault on Israel. In response, Israel declared a state of war, prompting the Israel Defense Forces to mount a swift counterattack.

As the conflict continued into Sunday, several celebrities expressed their support for Israel through posts on social media platforms. However, their younger fans quickly voiced their disagreement, urging the celebrities to support Palestine instead and accusing them of lacking understanding on the issue.

Celebrities such as Madonna, Gal Gadot, Nina Dobrev, Sofia Richie, Ashley Tisdale, and Kylie Jenner have posted in support of Israel. For instance, Kylie Jenner shared a photo from the pro-Israel account @StandWithUs on her Instagram story, although she removed it shortly after. Fans flooded her comments section with Palestinian flags and criticized her for what they viewed as a lack of knowledge and concern.

Other celebrities, like Ashley Tisdale, have not deleted their posts showing support for Israel. This has sparked a similar backlash from fans.

Ashley Tisdale shared the same graphic as Kylie Jenner on Saturday but opted not to remove it. She followed it up with another Instagram story where she wrote, “Showing support for Israel does not make a person anti-Palestine, and showing support for Palestine does not make someone antisemitic.” However, this drew further criticism from people who expressed their disappointment in the actress and vowed to boycott her movies.

While many celebrities only shared photos on their Instagram stories, Madonna and Gal Gadot posted photos on their main feeds. Both posts were quickly flooded with comments, with Gadot’s caption asserting her support for Israel and calling on others to do the same. These posts garnered thousands of comments, many of which advocated for a free Palestine.

The fact that the younger generation’s comments favor Palestine isn’t entirely surprising. Recent polls have shown a shift in sentiment among millennial Democrats, who now express more sympathy toward the Palestinians compared to a decade ago. Gallup reports that independent and Republican millennials have also become less biased in favor of Israel over the past ten years.
