5. Patriots Improve to 1-2 Record
With an important victory, the 2023 Patriots have now secured their first win of the season, bringing their record to 1-2. Once again, the Patriots’ defense displayed absolute dominance against an inferior quarterback and offense. However, there were some instances of sloppiness, such as four penalties in the third quarter, and a decrease in the effectiveness of the running game during the second half. These factors kept the door open for a potential Jets comeback for longer than it should have been. Moreover, New England’s inability to close out the game on offense, despite multiple opportunities, is cause for concern.
The injuries to defensive linemen Davon Godchaux and Daniel Ekuale will have a significant impact moving forward. Godchaux, in particular, is a key player in the nose tackle position, while Ekuale provides valuable rotational depth. Having two injuries in one position group is always concerning.
Although it wasn’t an explosive offensive performance, the Patriots didn’t require style points this week; their priority was to secure a win, and they accomplished that. However, there will be no respite next week, as they are set to face the Cowboys in Dallas. This will mark their third game against a conference contender in the span of four weeks.
