Japanese game developer Capcom is renowned for popular video game franchises like Resident Evil, Marvel vs. Capcom, and Street Fighter. However, Capcom’s ambition extends beyond captivating gamers, as it aims to captivate moviegoers as well.

During the Tokyo Game Show in Chiba, Japan, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, Capcom’s Chief Operating Officer, stated in an interview with CNBC that Capcom’s ability to sell both new and old titles contributes to its success in the gaming industry. This is exemplified by the company’s strategy of releasing new game titles almost every year for existing franchises, such as Street Fighter and Resident Evil.

Tsujimoto emphasized that this strategy showcases Capcom’s extensive and high-quality catalog. In line with this strategy, the company is planning to release a sequel to the action role-playing game Dragon’s Dogma, marking over 10 years since the original game’s release. While the sequel was featured at the Tokyo Game Show, an official release date has yet to be confirmed.

Tsujimoto shared with CNBC that the approach of releasing new titles to existing franchises is a crucial strategy for Capcom, as it leads to continued sales of their previously released brands.

Capcom will continue to develop game and film production: President and COO

Capcom has a strong presence in the film industry as well. The company’s game franchises, such as Street Fighter and Resident Evil, have been adapted into live-action movies. Tsujimoto highlighted that Capcom was one of the pioneers in merging the game and cinema businesses, recognizing the synergistic effects that occur when a game is made into a movie.

“We have experienced the synergistic effects of doing so, whereby movies sell well and games sell well, when a game is made into a movie.”

Building on its success in the film industry, Capcom is further expanding its presence by establishing Capcom Pictures in Hollywood in 2022. This film production company aims to produce more films, solidifying Capcom’s position in both the gaming and film sectors.

Tsujimoto expressed that Capcom’s future trajectory involves continuous development in both game and film production. The company aims to elevate digital entertainment to new heights by fostering healthy competition and mutual encouragement between these two businesses.

AI in games?

While generative artificial intelligence (AI) has captured attention as a major technological advancement with the potential to create text, pictures, and even videos, its integration into the game development industry may not be imminent.

Tsujimoto characterized integrating AI in game development as a challenging endeavor that requires addressing numerous issues before implementation can occur.

In agreement with Tsujimoto’s view, Hisashi Koinuma, President and Chief Operating Officer of Koei Tecmo Games, also expressed caution regarding the adoption of generative AI in the gaming industry.

AI is all the rage now, but the gaming industry may not be ready to adopt it just yet

Koinuma explained that despite the potential benefits of generative AI, including improvements in game production, there are still ongoing research and studies to determine its extent of usage and how it can contribute to creating better games while considering rights-related concerns.

Tsujimoto, on the other hand, acknowledged that generative AI could enhance efficiency in workforce and development. However, Capcom is currently in the research phase to explore how generative AI can be utilized for game development without reducing the number of developers. The aim is to improve efficiency through optimized allocation of personnel while leveraging the capabilities of generative AI.
