Unlock the Secret to Effortless Windscreen De-Icing: Expert Car Specialist Shares Game-Changing Tip

The frosty mornings bring the inconvenience of having to deal with icy car windows, whether you’re heading to work or doing the school run. However, it’s essential to de-ice them correctly to avoid glass damage.

Drivers have been sharing their clever tricks to combat colder weather, such as rubbing a vegetable on car windows to prevent fogging and using gadgets that can heat the car without using gas.

Now, Kwik Fit’s Roger Griggs has shared his expert advice on de-icing, which will make winter much easier for drivers. He strongly advises against pouring boiling water over the windows, as the sudden temperature change “can result in a cracked window and an expensive repair bill”.

Social media is inundated with hacks for dealing with icy cars. One hack suggests placing a sandwich bag filled with warm water against the glass. However, Roger warns that this can cause the glass to crack, especially if there’s already a chip or crack in your windscreen.

A common mistake is neglecting to de-ice all your windows and leaving the car unattended with the engine running or the keys inside.

So, what should we do? It may seem obvious, but many people forget – get a proper window scraper. Some suggest using a credit card, but this could damage your card or scratch the windscreen. It’s best to use a specially designed scraper.

Roger also has another valuable tip. “If you don’t have a garage – and if you do, your car should be in it, if possible – park as close to your house as you can, because the heat from your home can help prevent ice formation.

“If proximity to buildings isn’t possible, try to park your car facing east, so the windscreen receives the first rays of the sun.”

Roger suggests, “Some car owners opt for a full car cover, but if that seems excessive or costly, covering your windscreen with a blanket or cardboard will be helpful.

“Just make sure it’s secured as a windy night could cause your cover to disappear down the road.”

He also advises giving enough time for the windscreen to defrost properly. “If it’s an exceptionally cold morning, you may need to apply another round of de-icer,” he advises.
