A man from New York City is facing charges for providing acupuncture treatment without a license. Prosecutors revealed that the man, Yong De Lin, 66, punctured a woman’s lungs during a treatment session, which led to her needing emergency surgery. The incident occurred between May and October of last year when Lin performed unlicensed treatments on Shujuan Jiang, 63. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Lin was arraigned on four criminal charges related to the incident. The indictment stated that Jiang initially visited a medical office in the Flushing section of Queens on May 10, 2022, seeking relief from stomach and back pain, where she was introduced to Lin.
According to the AP, Lin continued to administer treatments to Jiang, despite not being a licensed acupuncturist or having applied for a license to practice acupuncture in New York state. On Oct. 28, during the final session, Jiang started feeling unwell. Lin proceeded to perform additional acupuncture and a cupping treatment before sending Jiang home. However, Jiang collapsed on the sidewalk while on her way home, prompting a bystander to call 911. At the hospital, doctors discovered that both of her lungs had collapsed due to the acupuncture treatments. Jiang underwent lifesaving surgery and remained in the hospital for six days.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz emphasized the importance of receiving medical care from licensed professionals. She stated, “The difference between receiving health care from a competent, licensed professional or someone who is unlicensed can mean the difference between life and death.” Katz added that Lin’s actions nearly resulted in the death of his patient. Lin now faces charges including assault in the first and second degrees, reckless endangerment in the first degree, and unauthorized practice of a profession. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. Lin’s attorney, Kathleen Gallo, did not respond to a request for comment. (Read more acupuncture stories.)
