Unleashing the Ultimate Airbnb Experience: Resistant Guest Refuses to Depart Opulent Estate without Paying

Elizabeth Hirschhorn, a Harvard graduate, found herself in a contentious battle with Sascha Jovanovic, the owner of a luxury estate in the hills of Brentwood. It all started when Hirschhorn rented a Los Angeles-area guesthouse from Jovanovic on Airbnb. According to the Los Angeles Times, problems arose between the two parties five months into her six-month reservation. The situation worsened when Hirschhorn refused to leave or pay rent after her scheduled stay ended on March 19, 2022. However, due to tenant protections in Los Angeles, Jovanovic couldn’t evict Hirschhorn without a legal reason.

As the dispute intensified, the city discovered that the guesthouse was never approved for occupancy, and Jovanovic had constructed a shower without a permit. While Jovanovic claims these were oversights on his part, they complicate matters even further. Hirschhorn demanded a refund of all the money she had already paid and insisted on a $100,000 relocation fee from Jovanovic before leaving. On the other hand, Jovanovic is seeking $60,000 in unpaid rent from Hirschhorn, as reported by ABC 7. Both parties are now engaged in a fierce legal battle.

Jovanovic spoke out about the situation, expressing his determination to resolve the matter. “I am not going to settle,” he told KTLA. “This cannot be right, and people like this have to be stopped.” His lawyer echoed this sentiment, stating that if Hirschhorn’s actions are deemed valid, it sets a dangerous precedent where tenants can exploit landlords by refusing to vacate unless they are paid. The Times reports that Airbnb was not involved beyond deleting Hirschhorn’s account, as Jovanovic’s offer to extend her stay was made off the platform, making it beyond Airbnb’s jurisdiction.

LA Mag describes Hirschhorn as a “serial squatter” who had previously lived rent-free in a Bay Area home for over a year, exploiting COVID regulations and health concerns. This case was settled before she moved into Jovanovic’s guesthouse. The New York Post highlights Jovanovic’s frustration with Hirschhorn’s actions, labeling her as someone who knows how to manipulate the system. Hirschhorn’s attorney defended her, claiming that the articles about his client amount to a “malicious smear campaign” orchestrated by Jovanovic who is spreading false information about her.
