The Powerball drawing on Monday will feature the ninth-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.
For the 28th consecutive drawing on Saturday, no tickets matched all six numbers, leading to a jackpot of $785 million. This makes it the fourth-largest jackpot in Powerball history and the ninth-largest in U.S. lottery history since the game’s inception in 1992.
Since July 19, there have been no winning tickets with all six numbers. The last time this happened, a lucky ticket holder won $1.08 billion at a mini-market in downtown Los Angeles.
Be sure to purchase your tickets by 7 p.m. on Monday, as the drawing will take place at 7:59 p.m.
The odds of matching all five numbers and the Powerball number are 1 in 292.2 million, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association. Your chances of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9.
Contrary to popular belief, purchasing tickets at a store that has previously sold winning jackpot tickets does not increase your chances of winning, according to USC mathematics professor Ken Alexander.
“The likelihood of any given place selling a winning lottery ticket is solely based on the number of tickets sold,” explained Alexander to City News Service.
However, if you want to improve your odds of avoiding sharing the jackpot, Alexander suggests choosing numbers that are less commonly selected. Many players tend to choose numbers based on their birthdays, so selecting numbers higher than 31 may give you a better chance of winning alone.
In Saturday’s drawing, a ticket was sold at a liquor store in Burbank which matched five numbers but missed the Powerball number, earning its owner $5,422,749.
In other states, tickets with five numbers but no Powerball number are worth either $1 million or $2 million. However, California law requires major lottery payouts to be distributed on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the value can be more or less than $1 million.
According to the Multi-State Lottery Association, three other tickets were sold with five numbers, but no Powerball number. One ticket in Michigan utilized the Power Play option and is worth $2 million. Tickets in Florida and New York are each worth $1 million.
The winning numbers from Saturday’s drawing were 1, 12, 20, 33, 66, and the Powerball number was 21. The estimated jackpot was $748 million, making it the seventh-largest in Powerball history and the twelfth-largest in U.S. lottery history.
The Powerball game is available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
