Apple released its iOS 17.1 Wednesday, introducing new features for AirDrop, Apple Music, and more. The update also addressed radiation issues for the iPhone 12 identified by French regulators.
The OS update includes a feature that allows AirDrop transfers to continue over a cellular connection, even without WiFi. This was first reported by MacRumors. Apple Music also received a new Favorites feature that generates recommendations based on user’s uploaded songs, albums, playlists, and artists.
Additionally, the update brings the option to customize the StandBy feature on select iPhones, including the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. This feature keeps the display screen on and in landscape orientation while the phone is charging. Another new addition is the ability to switch the Action Button on the iPhone 15, which can now activate the flashlight or camera in addition to the existing mute or ring option that has been available since 2007.
The iOS 17.1 update also addresses several regulatory fixes, including an issue with the iPhone 12 that led to a temporary ban by French regulators last month due to exceeding European radiation exposure limits. The ban was lifted after Apple released the update, satisfying the demands of the Agence Nationale des Frequences (ANFR).
In addition to the above, Apple’s iOS update resolves a screen burn-in issue, adjusts the user’s Significant Location privacy settings, and optimizes crash detection for iPhone 14 and iPhone 15.
