Union pilots at United Airlines to receive significant pay raises

United Airlines and its pilot union announced on Saturday that they have reached a contract agreement that will result in a substantial increase in pilot pay over a four-year period, potentially reaching up to 40%.

The agreement, which the union values at around $10 billion, comes after more than four years of challenging negotiations, including picketing and the potential threat of a strike. The deal highlights the significant leverage held by labor groups, particularly pilots, as airlines experience a strong recovery in travel and revenue.

The Air Line Pilots Association stated that the agreement, pending a ratification vote, would bring United pilots’ compensation in line with their counterparts at Delta Air Lines, who approved a similar pay-raising agreement earlier this year. The union highlighted that the agreement includes substantial increases in pay, retirement benefits, and job security.

In comparison to a previously rejected deal from November, this agreement appears to provide pilots with more favorable terms, particularly in regard to pay. If approved, pilots will receive immediate wage-rate increases ranging from 13.8% to 18.7%, depending on the type of aircraft they fly, followed by four smaller annual raises. Full details can be found on the union’s website.
