Unforgettable Showdown: Chiellini’s Review of Facing Messi’s Inter Miami, MLS’s Strongest Contender

LAFC defender Giorgio Chiellini hails Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami as the finest team he’s ever encountered in MLS after their 3-1 home defeat, endorsing Miami as a potential playoff contender.

“To be honest, this team [Miami] is by far the best I’ve faced in MLS,” stated the 39-year-old former Italian international defender. “Yeah, by far.”

Benefiting from two assists from Messi, Miami effectively contained LAFC at their raucous home ground, BMO Stadium, where numerous celebrities like LeBron James, Leonardo Di Caprio, Prince Harry, Selena Gomez, Will Ferrell, Jason Sudeikis, and members of Rage Against The Machine were present.

Following the loss, LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo was candid about Messi’s influence in MLS. “He’s the best player in the world, what did you think he was going to do when he came here?” Cherundolo quipped during the post-game news conference.

With two assists on Sunday, Messi’s overall tally for Miami now stands at 11 goals and five assists in 11 games across all competitions. Thanks to his exceptional form, Miami has remained unbeaten in those 11 appearances, maintaining their club record since Messi’s arrival in July.

Formerly languishing at the bottom of MLS’ Eastern Conference, Miami must climb from 14th place to at least ninth over the next nine games to enter the playoff conversation. Nonetheless, Chiellini has faith in their postseason prospects. “I believe they will make it to the playoffs,” affirmed the former Champions League finalist.

Chiellini also commended Messi for his impact on both Miami and the league as a whole. “Leo’s arrival in this league has been highly beneficial, not just for Miami and the game, but also for the increased attention that MLS now receives. It’s a tremendous stride for the league,” he remarked.

Messi reiterates Miami’s playoff aspirations. “Now we are going to try to reach the aim of being in the top eight to try to aim for the league,” he said. “This is the path we are on. We continue to grow. Undoubtedly, winning boosts our confidence.”

Messi recognizes the challenge posed by LAFC on Miami. “We knew it was a beautiful test to gauge our capabilities and where we stand,” Messi explained. “Playing on a difficult pitch against a formidable rival, the defending champions, we achieved a good result that sets us up for what lies ahead.

“Every day, the team grows, as we have been saying since the beginning. We were fortunate to win a title [Leagues Cup], and we reached a final.”

Messi has no plans to request rest in future games. “Physically, I feel fine. I will continue playing, contributing, and supporting the team in any way I can. I hope we can sustain this positive trajectory,” he affirmed.
