A New Jersey man finds himself in police custody after crashing his car into the local police department’s headquarters.
In a bizarre turn of events, the 34-year-old man emerged from his vehicle with his hands in the air like a victorious football player, while Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” played in the background, as captured in a video of the incident.
However, the police put an end to John Hargreaves’ jungle adventure and arrested him on a total of 10 charges relating to his rampage behind the wheel, according to a press release by James Pfeiffer, the Warren County prosecutor.
Prior to crashing into the Independence Township police headquarters, Hargreaves had intentionally driven into the garage door of a private residence, apparently to intimidate the homeowner, whom he knew. He now faces charges of burglary, criminal mischief, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and harassment.
Following the initial crash, Hargreaves proceeded to drive to the nearest police station, where he deliberately plowed his vehicle into the building, causing significant damage. The car finally came to a rest inside the squad room.
Officer Khilian Bernard narrowly escaped being struck by Hargreaves’ car. Bernard had just stepped away from his desk and was inside his sergeant’s office at the time of the incident.
“We’re talking probably a matter of seconds where he could have killed a police officer,” stated Pfeiffer in an interview with WFMZ-TV. “Just by the grace of God, he was not there at the time.”
As of now, the police department has not responded to Insider’s request for comment, and it remains unclear whether Hargreaves has obtained legal representation.
In addition to the charges related to the headquarters crash, Hargreaves has been charged with terrorism, causing widespread damage, aggravated assault, burglary, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and criminal mischief.
Court records indicate that Hargreaves was previously sentenced to two years of probation in 2021 for stalking and criminal trespassing.
