Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill proudly presents its new production of the play “I Am Barbie,” offering a fresh and adult take on the iconic doll. This production is a clever response to the success of Greta Gerwig’s film “Barbie.” Although the play originally debuted in Houston over a decade ago, its comedic script still makes a relevant contribution to the ongoing conversation about toys, fashion, and feminism. The 90-minute show will run for eight performances from Thursday, Aug. 31, through Sunday, Sept. 10.
In contrast to the movie, which features numerous Barbies, the play focuses on just one Barbie. Director Rob Maitner describes her as the center of attention, with everyone else revolving around her. Despite carrying a heavy burden, the doll always wears a smile.
“When you think of Barbie, she’s seen as an inanimate object, but society has projected all their hopes, dreams, and judgments onto her,” Maitner explains. “This play offers the character a chance to grapple with other people’s expectations, including those of her parents, Ken, her sister, and all the other Barbie owners. She’s a woman trying to navigate her way through this world while remaining positive.”
The play explores dark themes that are only hinted at in the pastel and pink film. Maitner compares its edgy humor to that of John Waters and the cheerful atmosphere of Pee-wee’s Playhouse. The result is an absurdist yet warm-hearted experience.
Maitner, known for producing the cabaret series “Sondheim Unplugged” at Manhattan’s 54 Below, was selected as the director due to his affinity for camp. The production will be set in a Barbie Dreamhouse netherworld, incorporating projections for setting and mood. While there will be several clothing racks, the aim is to avoid turning the play into a fashion show. Fast scene changes are expected, and Barbie’s outfit will be accessorized to the fullest, just like any good Barbie would. The stage design and lighting will be handled by John Sowle, while costumes will be created by Michelle Rogers.
Producer Steven Patterson reveals that he and Sowle have been aware of the “I Am Barbie” script since 2009, and had initially planned to stage it in 2016. However, the production was canceled due to difficulties in casting. With the release of the movie, an ideal opportunity arose, and this time there were no issues with finding the right cast. Olivia Sargent, a 23-year-old actress, takes on the iconic role of Barbie and leads a four-member cast. Sargent has expressed her excitement about portraying such a cultural icon, noting her own history with playing with Barbies during her childhood.
Despite the common practice of avoiding exposure to previous interpretations of a work, Maitner intentionally watched the film about a week before rehearsals began. He believes it would be silly to ignore such a significant piece of art that is part of the ongoing conversation surrounding Barbie. Maitner loved the film, finding it moving and filled with beautiful messages.
While the film leans towards “Feminism 101” for young audiences, the play assumes that the audience is already familiar with those concepts and explores other issues between men and women, mothers and daughters, sisters, and friendships. Sexuality is also emphasized, with Barbie’s own understanding (or lack thereof) providing plenty of humor.
