The US State Department urges all US citizens worldwide to exercise caution due to increased tensions, potential terrorist attacks, and demonstrations against US citizens and interests.
The worldwide caution alert is significant amidst ongoing protests in the Middle East against the Israel-Hamas war, with many demonstrators targeting US diplomatic compounds.
State Department spokesperson Matt Miller stated that multiple factors are considered when issuing a worldwide alert.
According to Miller, the decision is based on a comprehensive assessment of global events.
In response to the escalating tension, the State Department has raised the Travel Advisory for Lebanon and Israel, and authorized non-emergency US government personnel and family members to leave. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has ordered diplomatic posts to conduct emergency security reviews.
The State Department’s last worldwide alert was issued in August 2022 following the killing of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.
The notice advises US citizens abroad to be vigilant in tourist areas and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for emergency information and assistance.
Retired senior State Department official Todd Brown expressed concern over the situation around the Israel-Hamas war, stating that it has the potential to worsen.
Brown highlighted the high emotional and political temperature and emphasized the possibility of the situation spreading beyond the Middle East to Europe.
He urged people to reconsider their travel plans, including trips to European capitals, and advised caution in light of the escalating tensions.
US embassies will review their security measures and may request additional security assistance from the host government to ensure the safety of personnel. They will also evaluate whether to restrict the movement of diplomats within the country.
The State Department will consider the safety of diplomats and their families when deciding whether to authorize or order their departure from embassies.
Brown emphasized that the primary concern is the safety of individuals in harm’s way and that withdrawing personnel is a way to ensure their security.
The State Department may also implement movement restrictions for diplomats in certain countries to enhance safety protocols.
Brown expressed deep concern over the situation and implied that it requires close attention.
