Britain has announced that it has strengthened the protection measures in its Online Safety Bill to shield children from accessing pornography online. The new provisions, which come as updates to the long-awaited legislation, raise the standards for age verification tools used by platforms that publish or allow porn to ensure that they effectively determine whether a user is a child. The aim is to strike a balance between protecting social media users, especially children, from harmful content, while respecting free speech.

The updated bill also holds top executives personally responsible for safeguarding children on their platforms, with the possibility of jail time for tech bosses who fail to implement adequate safety measures. The government’s goal is to set a global standard for protecting children online and prevent tragic consequences resulting from abuse or exposure to harmful content.

In addition, the amendments allow regulators to access information about a child’s social media usage if requested by a coroner. This measure aims to help bereaved families gain insight into the potential influence of online activity on a child’s death.

The tech industry, including companies like Apple, has expressed concerns about certain provisions in the bill. In particular, there are concerns that the legislation could be used to compromise end-to-end encryption in messaging services in order to scan for child abuse material.

The Online Safety Bill is currently under review in the House of Lords, where lawmakers can propose further amendments before deciding whether to pass or reject the legislation.
