Australian UFC fighter, Alexander Volkanovski, revealed that he lost a staggering 26.5 pounds in just 11 days in preparation for his highly-anticipated rematch against Islam Makhachev at UFC 294.
The rematch is set to take place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Saturday, October 21. This will be their second encounter after Makhachev defeated Volkanovski at UFC 284 in February, claiming the UFC lightweight championship belt.
Volkanovski, 35 years old and hailing from Australia, received news of the fight just two weeks ago when Makhachev’s original opponent, Charles Oliveira, withdrew due to injury.
As a result, Volkanovski had to undergo a rapid weight loss program in order to meet the weight requirements for the fight, all within a 12-day notice.
Volkanovski admitted, “Obviously I was retaining a lot of water. I was on a vacation with my family, enjoying the sun, having drinks, and eating well.”
He continued, “But I noticed my weight a day before I received the call, and I wasn’t happy with it. So when I did get the call, I was already a kilo or two lighter.”
Volkanovski stated, “My body knows what to do when I need to shed some weight. I just flick a switch and the weight comes off. My body kicks into gear.”
During the weigh-in, Volkanovski recorded a weight of 154.5 pounds, while Makhachev weighed in at 155 pounds.
