UAW President Shawn Fain made a bold announcement during a presentation on Friday, October 13, signaling a more aggressive stage of the ongoing strike. Fain expressed that automakers should no longer expect the union to adhere to the traditional Friday announcements about additional factories participating in the labor campaign. From now on, changes can occur “at any time.”
“Today, there will be no further strike announcements,” stated Fain. “Instead, we are entering a new phase in the standup strike. Going forward, we will identify plants as needed, with little notice.”
According to Fain, the UAW is no longer playing defense. Instead, their aim is to engage in tough negotiations to push for “total economic and social justice.”
Fain did not provide specific details about the negotiations with General Motors or Stellantis. His announcement came a day after the UAW strike expanded to include Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant. In his speech, he addressed Blue Oval CEO Jim Farley directly.
“Jim Farley received 21 million last year,” stated Fain. “We urge him to take two important actions right now: Reflect upon himself and consider Ford’s financial situation. Bring out the hefty checkbook that Ford uses when doling out millions to its executives or engaging in Wall Street giveaways.”
In response to the strike on October 12, Ford expressed their disapproval, stating: “The UAW’s decision to call a strike at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant is utterly irresponsible, although unsurprising given the union leadership’s strategy of prolonging reputational and industrial chaos, to harm the Detroit 3 for months to come.”
The Kentucky plant stands as Ford’s largest factory, generating $25 million in revenue annually. It is responsible for producing the F-Series Super Duty, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator, and employs 8,700 UAW members.
The UAW initiated strikes against Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis on September 15, 2023. The union has continuously added more workers to its labor campaign. On October 9, an additional 4,000 members from Mack Trucks joined the movement.
