UAlbany’s Prime Performances 2023-24 Season Embraces Dark Themes

The University at Albany has curated an exciting and thought-provoking lineup for their 2023-24 Prime Performances series. This season, the series brings together elements of dystopian literature, climate change activism, and horror for a truly unique experience.

The series kicks off on September 24 with “Rising Tides: The Crossroads Project.” This environmentalist project combines music composed by Laura Kaminsky and performed by the Fry Street Quartet, a lecture by physicist Robert Davies, and art by painter Rebecca Allen and environmental photographer Garth Lenz.

In October, the focus shifts to the 70th anniversary of Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451,” in collaboration with the New York State Writers Institute. The program includes screenings of the 1966 and 2018 film adaptations, as well as a one-man stage production presented by Literature to Life, a theater company dedicated to verbatim adaptations of American literary classics.

The series has other exciting highlights, such as a screening of the silent horror film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” accompanied by an original score by local composer Brett L. Wery, and a one-man show called “Rhapsody in Black” written and performed by LeLand Gantt, which explores the actor’s personal journey and experiences with racism.

It’s worth noting that the Prime Performances series is part of UAlbany’s broader Dance in Albany season, providing even more diverse and engaging artistic experiences.
