X, the company formerly known as Twitter, has filed a lawsuit against a research group, alleging violations of its terms of service and engaging in a “scare campaign to drive away advertisers.”
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses the American and British operations of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) of unlawfully accessing protected X Corp. data.
X’s lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for breach of contract, violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, intentional interference with contractual relations, and inducing breach of contract. It also requests that CCDH and its agents be prohibited from accessing licensed materials.
CCDH has not yet responded to the lawsuit. In a recent blog post, the organization claimed that X had threatened to sue them over their work, which revealed the spread of hate and falsehoods on Twitter since Elon Musk took ownership.
According to CCDH, Musk’s actions are an attempt to suppress criticism and independent research in order to repair his relationship with advertisers. Musk has previously identified himself as a “free-speech absolutist” and has criticized “woke” language.
