Twenty Killer Whales Seen Near San Francisco Coast

Northern California witnessed an unusual and impressive gathering of almost two dozen orcas, spotted by a whale-watching tour last month. The killer whales were likely drawn together after a successful hunt for sea lions or seals, according to Marine Biologist and Owner of Monterey Bay Whale Watch, Nancy Black. While killer whales are more commonly found beneath Monterey Bay, they can be spotted anywhere from the coastline to just five miles off shore. The large group of whales was seen on May 7 near the Farallon Islands, approximately 28 miles west of San Francisco. The sighting was described by Michael Pierson, the Oceanic Society Naturalist leading the tour, as “really, really special.”
