Washington — Former President Donald Trump will face arraignment this afternoon in a federal court in Washington, D.C. The charges stem from his alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Special counsel Jack Smith is leading the latest case against Trump.
Trump’s plane departed from New Jersey a little after 2 p.m., headed towards the capital for the arraignment scheduled to start at 4 p.m. ET. Although cameras are not permitted inside the courtroom, CBS News will provide live coverage from reporters present at the scene, analyzing all developments as they unfold.
Following Tuesday’s approval by a federal grand jury hearing evidence in Smith’s investigation, Trump is facing a groundbreaking indictment with four felony counts. These charges include conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
The 45-page indictment outlines Trump’s involvement, along with six co-conspirators, in a series of plots aimed at impeding the transfer of power to Joe Biden after Trump’s loss in the 2020 election. These plots ultimately culminated in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. According to the indictment, Trump knowingly spread false claims of widespread voter fraud to lend credibility to his baseless assertions, generate a climate of mistrust and anger, and erode public confidence in the election process.
Trump has dismissed Smith’s investigation as politically motivated and maintains his innocence. It is anticipated that he will enter a plea of not guilty during his appearance at the U.S. District Court in Washington.
Today’s arraignment marks Trump’s third encounter with criminal charges within a span of four months. In April, he faced booking and processing in New York for state charges related to an alleged payment made to an adult film star in 2016, aimed at silencing her. In June, he made a court appearance in Miami for federal charges linked to Smith’s parallel investigation into his handling of classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago resort. In both instances, he pleaded not guilty.
