Trump Tells Christian Group: ‘I’m Being Indicted Because of You’

Donald Trump, who is currently facing federal trials in New York and Florida, expressed his perspective on the indictments during a conference with evangelical activists. The former president depicted his legal battle as a collective struggle with Christian activists at the event on Saturday night, as reported by the New York Times. Trump stated, “Together, we’re warriors in a righteous crusade to stop the arsonists, the atheists, globalists, and the Marxists.” Furthermore, he affirmed, “I’m being indicted for you, and I believe the ‘you’ represents more than 200 million people who love our country.” However, one of his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination called this claim “absurd” on Sunday.

Most of the GOP field delivered speeches at the Faith & Freedom Coalition event in Washington over the course of three days, with prominent figures such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence focusing on topics related to abortion. In his address, Pence challenged all GOP presidential candidates to commit to supporting a nationwide ban on abortions performed at 15 weeks and beyond. This proposal is more restrictive than anything Trump has previously endorsed. While Trump has previously referred to abortion restrictions as a state issue, he seemed to shift his stance on Saturday, as noted by USA Today. He stated, “There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life.” Attendees showed their support when the former president reminded them that he appointed three out of six Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade a year ago.

Another GOP candidate, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, criticized Trump on Sunday for claiming that he was indicted on behalf of the American people. Christie made these remarks during an interview on ABC News’ This Week, as reported by The Hill. He stated, “I don’t know how it benefited the American people for him to take highly sensitive intelligence and secret documents out of the White House, refuse to return them for over a year and a half, defy the FBI’s request to voluntarily return the materials, and ultimately be subject to an indictment that will likely have significant consequences for the country. No one wants to see this happen.” (Read more Donald Trump 2024 stories.)
