Former President Donald Trump is demanding the recusal of the judge overseeing the federal case accusing him of conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden.

The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama in 2014. Chutkan stands out as one of the few federal judges in D.C. to have delivered sentences longer than those requested by the Department of Justice in cases related to the January 6 Capitol riot, as reported by NBC News.

Chutkan has given Trump’s legal team until 5 p.m. ET on Monday to respond to prosecutors’ request for a protective order, which would prevent the former president from publicly sharing discovery materials. Trump’s attorneys requested additional time to prepare their response, but Chutkan promptly denied their request.

In a Sunday morning post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump expressed his belief that he would not receive a fair trial with the judge assigned to his case, questioning the judge’s impartiality and emphasizing widespread acknowledgment of this issue.

Last Tuesday, Trump was indicted on four federal felony charges related to his alleged efforts to discredit valid votes in the 2020 presidential race and undermine the election itself.

These charges mark Trump’s second federal case, as he also faces charges from June concerning the retention of classified documents after leaving office in 2021. Both cases have been brought by federal prosecutor Jack Smith, who was appointed as special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November.

Furthermore, Manhattan prosecutors have charged Trump with falsifying business records in connection with hush money payments made to women who claim to have had extramarital affairs with him. Trump has pleaded not guilty to these charges and consistently denied the alleged encounters.

On Sunday, the former president reiterated his desire to have his election case moved out of Washington, D.C., reiterating his previous claims that the region harbors an “anti-Trump” sentiment. Trump previously argued that obtaining a fair trial in Washington would be “IMPOSSIBLE,” citing his call for a “Federal TAKEOVER” of the district as evidence to support his assertion.

John Lauro, one of Trump’s defense attorneys, has hinted at the possibility of seeking a change of venue for the case.
