Trump Criticizes Biden, Democrats, and Automakers over Electric Vehicles in Detroit Suburbs – What Does it Mean for the Future of EVs?

Former President Donald Trump criticized President Biden, Democrats, and the big three automakers over electric cars in remarks in the Detroit suburbs Wednesday night while his Republican opponents were preparing for the second GOP presidential debate in California.

Trump spoke at non-union auto parts manufacturer and supplier Drake Enterprises in Clinton Charter Township, Michigan. However, he also addressed the United Auto Workers union members who were on strike in 20 states but not present in the room. Trump praised the work of auto workers and lamented the lack of credit they receive.

“You built this country,” Trump exclaimed to cheers from the audience. He expressed his support for the auto workers and their desire to make America great again by producing cars that can go far. Trump also criticized automakers for investing in electric cars, calling them “stupid or gutless” and claiming they are not cost-efficient.

In addition, Trump attacked President Biden’s record on auto manufacturing and workers, especially in light of Biden’s recent visit to the picket line. He accused Biden of engaging in a “government assassination” of jobs and the auto industry, warning that car production would shift to other countries. Trump emphasized that he had announced his visit to Michigan before Biden did and took a jab at Biden’s short visit duration.

Trump expressed hope that union leaders, including UAW leader Shawn Fain, would endorse him, despite their tendency to support Democrats. However, Fain’s previous remarks about Trump suggest he is not a fan. The UAW has yet to endorse any presidential candidate. Trump mentioned Fain and other union leaders throughout his speech. He criticized the Democratic National Committee for setting up anti-Trump billboards in Detroit and the Biden campaign for releasing an ad attacking him as anti-union.

Trump has been consistently criticizing Biden’s support for electric vehicles. He has taken various measures to promote the adoption of electric cars, such as reducing emissions, funding charging stations, and encouraging the conversion of auto manufacturing facilities. Meanwhile, other GOP candidates, including Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Mike Pence, Chris Christie, and Tim Scott, were participating in the second GOP debate at the Reagan Library. Despite Trump’s absence from the debates, his poll numbers remain strong.

In his speech, Trump jokingly referred to the second GOP debate as a “jobs” debate and playfully suggested that the candidates were competing for positions in his Cabinet. DeSantis stated that Trump should show up to the debates and defend his record for the sake of the voters. However, Trump has chosen not to participate.
