Trump Breaks Silence on Twitter After 2.5-Year Hiatus

Former President Donald Trump has made a triumphant return to X, the rebranded social media platform previously known as Twitter. After his recent surrender at an Atlanta jail on charges related to his alleged conspiracy to overturn his election loss, Trump wasted no time in firing off his first message in over two years. The message, accompanied by a mugshot photo, read: “Election interference. Never surrender!” Trump also shared a link to his fundraising website. This post marks Trump’s first since Twitter suspended his account indefinitely in January 2021, citing concerns of inciting violence following the Capitol attack. Although Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter led to Trump’s account reinstatement last November, the former president had refrained from tweeting, opting to focus on his self-launched Truth Social site.

For Trump, this return to X signifies a homecoming of sorts to one of his most influential platforms, through which he dominated his rivals during the 2016 primary and commanded the news cycle for years. Trump often marveled at the rapid dissemination of his messages from his account to cable news stations, often presented as “BREAKING NEWS.” The decision to return to X, along with the inclusion of a fundraising link, reflects the financial strain faced by Trump’s campaign as it battles mounting legal challenges in four jurisdictions. Trump’s political operation began the latter half of the year financially strained, with significant funds directed towards tackling legal issues as he gears up for a potential White House run in 2024.

It is worth noting that Trump boasts an impressive 86.5 million followers on X, eclipsing his rivals in the upcoming 2024 race. Although Trump resumed posting on Facebook in March with the proclamation, “I’M BACK!” after the reactivation of his personal account, he has remained loyal to Truth Social, the Twitter-like platform he created during his suspension. On this platform, he regularly shares thoughts, announcements, and reposts, even using it to break news of his indictments and planned surrenders amidst his mounting legal troubles.
