Trump anticipates additional criminal charges resulting from investigation into Georgia election

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, was present at a campaign rally in Erie, Pennsylvania on July 29, 2023. Lindsay Dedario captured the moment in a photograph.

During a campaign event in New Hampshire, Trump disclosed that he anticipates facing new criminal charges as a result of an investigation led by an Atlanta prosecutor, Fani Willis. These charges are linked to Trump’s attempts to overturn his loss in Georgia’s 2020 presidential election. Trump referred to Willis, the first Black woman to hold the position of Fulton County District Attorney, as “a young racist in Atlanta.”

This statement from Trump comes shortly after pleading not guilty to federal charges in Washington connected to his efforts to reverse President Joe Biden’s victory in 2020. Special Counsel Jack Smith is responsible for bringing these charges, one of three active criminal cases against Trump. Trump confidently predicted that more indictments will come his way, stating that he “should have four” by the following week. This statement was made to his fervent supporters in Windham.

Willis has indicated that she plans to seek indictments in mid-August. Her investigation began over two years ago after evidence surfaced that Trump had pressured Georgia election officials to manipulate the vote count to favor him. Two grand juries were established last month in Fulton County Superior Court, either of which can be used by Willis to pursue criminal charges related to her election probe.

During his speech, Trump criticized Willis by accusing her of wanting to indict him for what he deemed “a perfect phone call.” This echoes the language he previously used to defend himself during his first impeachment proceedings in 2019. Alongside this, Trump lamented his numerous legal battles, suggesting that they are all part of a larger conspiracy to undermine his presidential campaign. He continued to propagate his false claim of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.

Trump brought attention to a dispute in the D.C. case concerning a protective order sought by federal prosecutors. This order would prevent Trump from publicly disclosing certain evidence gathered in the investigation. His defense team requested a narrower order, but the Department of Justice opposed this, accusing them of attempting to litigate the case in the media rather than the courtroom. On Tuesday, the defense lawyers asked the judge for a hearing on the protective order to be postponed until the next week.

Legal experts predict that Trump’s consistent attacks on individuals involved in his criminal cases may lead to a gag order being imposed on him. Unlike the protective order, which seeks to prevent improper disclosure of information during the discovery process, a gag order would restrict Trump from discussing his case publicly.

Trump argued that the protective order was an infringement on his right to free speech. He imagined a scenario where he would be questioned by the press about his cases but legally prohibited from responding. Trump maintained that this restriction would be detrimental to his votes and emphasized that his First Amendment right should not be taken away.
