WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump and Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona have made controversial remarks suggesting that outgoing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley is a traitor and should be executed.
Trump criticized Milley, an Army general, in a post on his Truth Social site, accusing him of secretly communicating with Chinese counterparts during the final months of Trump’s presidency.
“If the reports are correct, Milley was actually colluding with China to undermine the President,” Trump wrote.
“This is such a grave offense that historically, the punishment would have been death!” he added.
Trump further claimed that Milley’s actions could have led to a war between China and the United States.
In contrast, Milley testified before Congress in September 2021 that he had reassured Chinese officials that Trump had no plans of attacking China during his last weeks in office.
Gosar, in a newsletter published on Sunday, accused Milley of collaborating with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to undermine Trump’s presidency and intentionally delaying National Guard assistance during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Gosar went as far as to suggest that Milley should be hanged and labeled him a “traitor.”
A spokesperson for Milley, who is stepping down as Joint Chiefs chairman at the end of September, has not yet commented on the matter.
In response to Trump’s comments, Pelosi stated that the use of such language should disqualify someone from holding public office.
During his presidency, Trump frequently criticized military officials, including referring to Milley as a “dumbass” in 2021 and former Secretary of Defense James Mattis as “the world’s most overrated general.”
In a 2020 report by The Atlantic, Trump was alleged to have called fallen soldiers “losers” and “suckers” during a visit to an American cemetery near Paris. He also reportedly referred to Marines who died in the Battle of Belleau Wood as “suckers.”
The Battle of Belleau Wood, which took place in 1918, was a significant and successful engagement for the Marines in France.
